JEWISH FAMILIES in BESANCON (FRANCE)
during the 19th century

After the French Revolution many Jewish families settled in Besançon for good or not. Most of them came from Alsace.

I've tried to reconstruct their genealogies. With the exception of Tristan BERNARD, writer (among other activities) whose humor is well-known, these families have remained largely unknown.

The available sources are the following :
  • choice of names in 1808
  • specific censuses of 1809, 1813, and 1839
  • general censuses, notably the census of 1851 (mention of religion)
  • civil status
  • notaries (marriage contracts, wills)

Thanks to these various sources, i've been able to constitute an important file. The reconstitution of the multiple branches is in the process of completion.

The most frequent names are :
1) LEVY HAUSER DREYFUS
2) BLOCH
PICARD/BICKARD
BLUM
SCHWOOB
MAYER/MEYER
VEIL/WEILL
3) BERNARD
